The Chennai Press Club is the premier professional association of journalists in the city. Located inside the sylvan grounds of the Government Estate just off arterial Anna Salai, the club has a long history of playing host to several dignitaries including Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, foreign guests and personalities who serve society or have excelled in various endeavours. The press club has a membership base that is primarily made up of members of the journalistic fraternity. It also has associate members from related fields and some corporate members from industry. As an institution, it has been in the forefront of any struggle to assert the rights of the Fourth Estate. Its central location in the State capital and its traditional welcoming ambience has made the club the preferred venue for holding press conferences. Activities: "Meet the press programmes": Face-to-face programmes for the media are regularly held at the Chennai Press Club. Guests from various fields are invited to interact with journalists at these events. New and modernised premises: There is a long felt need to upgrade the infrastructure of the Club to match international standards. This objective was recently endorsed by Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, Ms. J Jayalalithaa and she has given permission for a new building to be constructed in the existing location. Plans have been drawn up for an aesthically designed premises on an area of about 3000 sq feet. Mr.N.Ram Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu is the chairman of the building committee. |
